Main Points of Motorcycle Insurance Thailand

Classes of Insurance for Motorbike

Class 1 (For Bikes below 5 years of age and 250 cc and above)

Class 1 coverage is mostly for Big Bikes coverage includes comprehensive insurance for your bike and yourself, includes Personal Accident insurance for death and dismemberment, offers coverage for Bail Bond, Medical Treatment, Death and Property for Third Party coverage and Coverage for your bike. Most of the insurance companies have a deductible / excess for accidents that are considered the insured’s fault.

Class 2+, 3+ (For New Bikes - 5 years of age)

Class 2+ 3+ coverage policy would provide cover for Third Party and Partial coverage for your bike. It has a built in Personal Accident Insurance for death and dismemberment, offers coverage for Bail Bond, Medical Treatment, Death and Property for Third Party coverage and partial coverage for your bike.

Class 3 (For New Bikes - over 5 years of age)

Class 3 is the only insurance available for bikes over 5 years of age. The coverage for this kind of policy would provide cover for mostly Third Party. It has a built in Personal Accident insurance for Death and dismemberment, offers coverage for Bail Bond, Medical Treatment and Death and Property for Third party coverage.

Motorcycle Insurance in Thailand is quite different, there is no full coverage offered to bikes that are below 250cc and full comprehensive insurance are only offered to Big Bikes. For normal bikes 150cc-250cc, insurance companies recommend and offer 2nd class or 3rd class insurance, this is basically coverage for the third party rather than coverage for your bike. 1st class insurance is usually only offered to Big Bikes with more than 250 cc and usually with a deductible for own fault accidents.

To find the best plans for yourself, you must always compare between available plans and options and also take a look at the terms and conditions from both of the insurance companies and the OIC thoroughly.

Steps to apply for Motorcycle Coverage

Buying motorbike insurance is simple & easy

To apply for motorbike insurance, we will need the documents from you as below (This applies to every insurance companies) :

1. Apply through our website or contact a customer service representative.
2. Submit a copy of your Passport or Thai Driving License.
3. Submit a copy of your Green book or Registration or Deed of Sale.
4. Pay Invoice Premium
5. You’re covered.
6. The original documents (policy) will be sent to your mailing address within 7-14 days

*Some insurance companies ask for pictures of your bike for inspection purposes, this is especially necessarry for First Class Insurance.

FAQs

What is the difference between 3rd, 2nd and 1st class insurance?

First class insurance is comprehensive and covers the bike and third party as well. For the others, 2nd and 3rd class usually just covers third party liability. 2nd class still has somehow partial coverage for some bikes but 3rd class mostly is for third party liability.

What is Dealer and Garage coverage mean for motorcycle insurance ?

When buying Class 1 (First Class) insurance, you can always choose between Dealer or Garage coverage. Meaning that when you have been in an accident, if you have a dealer motorcycle insurance policy and you drive a Dutaci, you can take your car into Ducati Dealer to get reparied but if you have a Garage policy, you will need to go to a normal contacted garage. Motorcycle insurance with dealer type of coverage is of course will be more expensive than the normal garage coverage.

If I buy now will I be covered today as well?

Yes, if your coverage start date is today, your accidents will immediately be covered. As long as you have already paid, then coverage is already guaranteed.

Is there a hotline for emergencies?

Every insurance company is required to have a Emergency hotline.

Do you have to put a name driver or can my wife/husband drive the bike too and still be covered?

Yes, your wife/husband or girlfriend/boyfriend can also drive the bike and still be covered.

Will this provide coverage for when I hit a property or a person?

Yes, all of these insurance policies provide cover for public liability or third party property insurance.

What insurance should I get?

Bike insurance is very specific to each type of bike, 3rd class insurance will cover bikes that are older than 5 years old, 2nd and 1st class will only cover bikes that are new upto 5 years of age, so it depends on the type of bike that you have.

Is there a no-claim bonus ?

No-claim bonus will only be available for First class insurance (Class 1) If you haven't made any claims on your policy, you will get a no-claim bonus of 20% every year until your no-claim bonus reaches 50% *This will depends on the guidelines of each insurance company, some companies offer a no-claim bonus and some don't.

How long until I get my original policy ?

You will receive 2 sets of documents (PDF and original documents)

We will send the PDF documents set by LINE or Email within 1-2 days, in which you can print this and keep in with you (or in your vehicle) as this will be your temporary policy (any emergencies or accidents, this document will be enough)

For the original documents set, you will get them within 7-14 working days. We will send them to your mailing address that you have specify. In the mean time, your bike is already covered and you can call the hotline for emergencies and accidents.
