Discussing memory is complicated, there are different factors that come about when we talk about it. There’s genetics, physiological changes, education and experience. When we were kids, we forget things all the time but we don’t blame that on anything, we were just simply being kids. As we grow older things change, these lapses in memory might be something bigger than just forgetting where you placed your keys. These lapses can lead to something scarier that is why we do our best to prevent further damage and enhance ourselves for the better.

A good way to start is by eating the right kinds of food, incorporating important vitamins and minerals into our daily diet is one thing that can help in improving our brain function and memory.

We all know that oil based salad dressings are better not only for the brain but also for the heart as the cream based ones are high in fat. Oil based salad dressings are high in Vitamin E. Vitamin E is a potent antioxidant that helps protect neurons and nerve cells. Although the study regarding the effects of vitamin E to the brain are not relatively strong, there are some cases that show substantial potential. Plus its vitamins, that can’t be that bad for you right?

Fish is good for, yes sometimes it’s hard to eat but this is where delayed gratification comes in. Eating fish is good for the brain because it’s filled with Omega 3 fatty acids including DHA. What is DHA? It’s Docosahexaenoic Acid. DHA seems to be very important for the normal functioning of neurons. So, Go Fish!

Whole grains such as bread, brown rice and oatmeal reduce the risk for heart disease. If we don’t get good flow to the brain it clouds our judgement and may even cause damages that we are unaware of. Also this gives you energy and the ability to concentrate comes from the adequate supply of energy.

Eating berries has beneficial effects on the brain. Berries contain high amounts of antioxidants that protect cells from damage. Components of berries also improve cognition and motor control.

Vegetables such as Kale, Collard Greens, Spinach and Broccoli are not only good for digestion they’re also a good source of Vitamin E and Folate. Folate however and how it protects the brain is still unclear. But it has been said that it can lower homocysteine levels in the blood that may trigger the death of nerve cells.


These are suggestions and researchers are basically still figuring out the brain and how it works. But then again, there’s no harm in trying.
